overview
Church of the Intercession of the Virgin was built in Kiev city 1766 to the design of Ivan Grigorovich-Barsky. The church is sited at the foot of the hill on which stands St Andrew's Church. It is tripartite in form, but the central section is appreciably broader than the side ones, so that it approaches a cruciform plan. The projecting arms of the transepts and apse are semicircular, while the narthex is square.
The building is crowned by three cupolas along the longitudinal axis. The facades are decorated with Corinthian pilasters, superimposed on one another at the corners of the building. The windows are in two tiers and were originally decorated with stucco, but this was destroyed during a fire in 1811 and never renewed.
On the south and north fronts are two porches with paired Tuscan columns. The decor of the interior, and the iconostasis perished in the fire of 1811, and only the Corinthian capitals of the pilasters recall its former beauty.
