overview

Church of St Michael was built in Kiev city in 1070-1088 on the steep bank of the Dnepr river, commissioned by Prince Vsevolod Yaroslavich. Originally this was a three-aisled church with three apses and four supporting piers bearing a single lantern, a system of semicircular vaults and four-vaulted cupolas without drums.

In time the Dnepr began to undermine the bank, and in 1200 a stone retaining wall was built. During the Mongol-Tartar invasion the wall collapsed, carrying with it the eastern part of the church. In 1635-1647 a wooden sanctuary was built on to the surviving part of the church from the east, and a log-frame roof was provided. In 1766-1769 the Church of St Michael was restored by the architect Mikhail Yurasov after a fire.
