Kiev city Golden Gate was built under Yaroslav the Wise in 1017/19-1024, when Kiev's new fortifications were being constructed. As the chronicle shows, the Golden Gate was a huge rectangular tower with a gateway Church of the Annunciation as its first floor.

Kiev city Golden Gate was built of stone and large flat bricks, with pink mortar. The gate's importance can be seen from its size: the thoroughfare is twenty-nine meters long and seven and a half meters wide, and the height of the vault was only slightly less than that of the nave of St Sophia's Cathedral.

The huge ramparts and moats surrounding ancient Kiev were leveled in the nineteenth century, and all that remains of the Golden Gate is the bases of the two walls on either side of the thoroughfare.
