Kiev Ukraine Lipki and Pechersk

Content:

overview

These occupy the high hills between the Kreshchatik valley and the rivers Dnepr and Lybed. In the mid-eleventh century a cave monastery came into being here. To the north of it was the princely village of Berestovo with the country palace of the Kievan princes of the Riurikovich dynasty. Prince Vladimir Sviatoslavich died here in 1015.

Neither the palace nor the church of Sts Peter and Paul mentioned in the chronicle have survived. They were probably burnt down in 1096 during the assault by the Polovtsian Khan Boniak. In the first half of the twelfth century the Church of the Saviour was built in place of the burnt-down church.
