Mariinsky Palace of Kiev city is U-shaped with the main facade facing the square, where the two wings enclose a cour d'honneur; the rear facade is turned towards the park. The Mariinsky Palace burned down in 1819, and it was only in 1870, when it was restored by the architect Karl Mayevsky, that details characteristic of Rastrelli's work were used in its decoration.
