The ensemble of Kiev Vydubychi Monastery was formed in the eleventh century. The name arises from a legend telling how the pagan idols were thrown into the Dnepr by the command of Prince Vladimir Sviatoslavich. The pagan Kievans walked, mourning, along the bank, and prayed: "Vydybai bozhe" ("Swim up again, god").
